Hanako Shimamura

After completing a MSc in Child Development and Education at the Department of Education, Hanako started her DPhil in 2014.

She has worked as a Montessori preschool/kindergarten teacher in Vancouver, Canada for six years before coming to Oxford.

Prior to her DPhil, Hanako completed a Bachelor of Arts in history at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, a Montessori teacher diploma in Vancouver, Canada and her Master of Science in Child Development and Education at Oxford University.

Her DPhil focuses on the quality of early childhood education and its influence on the development of children’s self-regulation and cognitive and social-emotional competences.

Thesis title:
Schooling effects on children’s self-regulation and cognitive and social-emotional development

Hanako’s research interests include self-regulation; cognitive and social-emotional development of young children; the effectiveness of preschool programmes; student-teacher relationships; mindfulness; child-centred learning; Montessori education
