Gareth Cooke (PGCE Science)

Tell us something about what you were doing before you came to Oxford

Completed a PhD in chemistry in Dublin and worked for some time for Hewlett-Packard in Ireland.

What do you like most about studying in the Department of Education?

I like the hands on approach to teaching and there is also a good network of support for interns.

What attracted you to the programme of study here?

In general – the training is more subject specific in the UK than in Ireland and the course is cheaper. There are also more jobs at the end!
Specifically to Oxford – the OFSTED report was very positive and the rate of employment for graduates was one of the highest in the country.

What qualities do you think an Education student at Oxford needs to have in order to be successful?

Enthusiasm, good communication skills, maturity, organisation.

If you are a PGCE student, how has your course influenced your thinking about teaching?

It’s made more a lot more creative than I was and helped me to improve my organisational skills. It’s also made me more enthusiastic about areas of science that perhaps I wasn’t to keen on before now.

We hope that you would recommend the Department of Education as a place to come and study. What reasons would you give for this?

Good support network, good employment opportunities, well balanced and engaging course, excellent practical experience gained during the year.

What are your career ambitions after you complete the course?

Start teaching and take it from there – I would hope to spend a few years in the UK with the possibility of returing to Ireland in a number of years.

If I knew before I started the course what I know now, I would….

Have been able to focus on other areas of my teaching which still need work!

Please add anything else you would like to say

Very happy with the course, would and have recommended it to a few people including my girlfriend who is doing it next year!
