Professor Jim Tognolini

Jim Tognolini is currently Director of Pearson Research and Assessment, Professorial Fellow at Wollongong University in New South Wales; and Adjunct Professor of Education at the University of Western Australia.

In his current position he is responsible for the design, implementation and on-going management of assessment systems and learning processes.

From 2002 to 2006, Professor Tognolini was Research Director (System and School Testing) at the  Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). In this role he was the Independent Assessment Expert for the National Measurement Advisory Group (NMAG). During the last 15 years he was the Project Director and lead psychometrician for most of the State-based testing programmes in Australia.

In the last five years Professor Tognolini has conducted a review of the standards referenced system of New Zealand to account for variability of grades; a review of the National Examinations and Assessment Systems for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; produced a report for the Western Australian Curriculum Council articulating some of the challenges of assessing in a standards based system.; and was part of a team that examined the feasibility of producing an Australian Certificate of Education.

Professor Tognolini has been a psychometric consultant to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority; the Education Department of Western Australia; the Curriculum Council of Western Australia; the Tasmanian Department of Education; the New South Wales Department of Education and Training; the New South Wales Board of Studies; and, the Queensland Studies Authority. He has extensive experience in liaising with representatives at all levels of government and educational organisations within Australia and overseas on assessment, standards and particularly the use of measurement information in informing system level planning; monitoring of standards; and, utilising data for improving  school level teaching and learning.

He has given numerous key note addresses and seminars in countries that include Singapore, Hong Kong, The United Arab Emirates, India, Jordan, New Zealand, Oman, South Africa, Indonesia, China and Thailand.

He will be in residence at the Centre during part of each year and an active participant in the workshop programme of the Centre.
