MSc in Learning and Teaching
This is a new part-time MSc programme for qualified teachers who are interested in developing their knowledge, understanding and practice. It has been developed in partnership with local schools and authority advisors. The focus is on learning and teaching in schools (or other educational settings, as appropriate), and the programme is rooted in participants’ own practice.
Each option will involve carrying out investigations in school, supported by appropriate reading and attendance at two intensive two-day residential courses in Oxford. Throughout the course there is a strong emphasis on collaboration, culminating in a final research and development project, elements of which must involve work with colleagues. The university’s VLE (Weblearn) will be used to support the school-based tasks and sustain critical discussion. Supervision of students’ work on assignments will mainly be offered within small subject-specific support groups, with further individual guidance provided by a university supervisor.
The course is open to all qualified teachers, but there are two routes through it; one for those who already have a Masters-level PGCE qualification, and one for those who do not. While the course content for the first year is common to both, the duration of the course and the assessment demands for each group will differ. Those with M level accreditation (worth at least 60 credits) study two options in their first year and then complete a final year research and development project. Those with no previous M level accreditation study four options over two years and then complete the final project. If they choose, students may exit early with the award of a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching.
The MSc is directed by Dr Katharine Burn. A wide range of lecturers from across the Department teach on the course providing students with subject-specific teaching and supervision to complement the core teaching within each option.
