Visiting as a ‘Recognised Student’

The department occasionally receives queries from graduate research students registered in other universities, who wish to spend a short period of time studying in Oxford.

Applications are normally for visits of one term. All applications are considered on their merit, and one or two are approved each year. Applicants need to have a sponsor, who is an existing member of academic staff, and who is willing to fully back and support your application. They should be willing to act as your Academic Advisor during your time in Oxford, and to provide general advice about your research topic, usually meeting two or three times a term. However, you should expect to work independently and without close supervision or systematic instruction.

You will be entitled to use all the University’s libraries and attend lectures (with the permission of the lecturer). You will not be affiliated to a college, or receive any formal accreditation for your studies here. Student desk space in the department is very limited, and not usually available to visiting recognised students.

Formal applications are made through Graduate Admissions and the University’s ‘Recognised Student’ application process. University tuition fees are payable. Some colleges admit visiting graduate students via a separate procedure.

In addition to submitting your application, you will be invited to attend an informal interview, usually via Skype, between you and your academic advisor to discuss your research topic.

Additional entry requirements

If your first language is not English, you will be asked to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level (i.e. 7.5 IELTS, TOEFL 110) as required by the University. The requirement for certification may be waived if there is suitable alternative evidence of that you have met the required level of English language proficiency. Please see the Graduate Admissions website for more detailed information about our language requirements.

If evidence that you successfully meet the English language condition cannot be provided with your application, the language requirement will be set as a condition if an offer is made.
