Biography

Dr Brock specialises in Comparative and International Education, and from 1994 to 2003 collaborated with Professor David Phillips in the development and delivery of the MSc in that field. He is now a Senior Research Fellow, and holds a UNESCO Chair in the field of Education as a Humanitarian Response.
 

With a background in Geography and Anthropology he has been involved in International Educational Development at the universities of Leeds, Hull and Oxford as well as in the field for such agencies as The World Bank, The European Commission, DfID, The Commonwealth Secretariat, UNESCO and UNDP. 

For much of the 1970s and 80s Dr Brock worked mainly in Latin America and in small developing countries in the tropical island zones, but since 1989 he has operated mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, China and now the Middle East. Most of his field experience has been in Teacher Education and Training, Gender, Education and Development, Curriculum Development and Educational Planning.

Since 1998 Dr Brock has been increasingly involved with UNESCO's work on the role of universities in development, the recognition of international standards at tertiary level and the contribution of universities to the role of education as a humanitarian response to the needs of those excluded from mainstream provision, such as: most refugees and asylum seekers, communities displaced within their own countries, street children and working children, some HIV/AIDS sufferers, nomadic peoples and oppressed indigenous minorities.
