Dr Geoff Hayward[back]

Geoff Hayward is a University Lecturer in Education, Associate Director of the ESRC Research Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance (SKOPE), a Director of the Nuffield 14-19 Review, and co-director of the Oxford Centre for Socio-cultural and Activity Theory (OSAT). He helps coordinate the Higher Education and Professional Learning Research Group and is a fellow of Kellogg College.
Geoff was originally a research biologist, but after undertaking post-doctoral work at the University of Liverpool he decided to become a science teacher in the Further Education sector in Wakefield District College. He was a founder member of the Bath/Macmillan post-16 science education project which led to the publication of a large number of text books. Before returning to Oxford in 1993, Geoff taught at the Liverpool Institute of Higher Education where he worked with primary school teachers as they implemented the science National Curriculum. Originally appointed as a science teacher educator, in 1998 Geoff was seconded to work with the ESRC Research Centre SKOPE, becoming Associate Director of that centre in 2003.
In 2003 he was also part of the team that set up the Nuffield 14-19 Review of Education and Training, the most systematic inquiry into this phase of educuation and training undertaken in the last thirty years.
It was during his five years at Wakefield District College that Geoff became interested in vocational education, and the relationship between formal education and the world of work. It is this interest that he is pursuing through his work in SKOPE and the Nuffield 14-19 Review. His research revolves around three sets of problems:
- The formulation of Vocational Education and Training Policy
- The design of effective Vocational Education and Training learning environments, including qualification design and work-based learning.
- Progression from Vocational Education and Training into Higher Education and the workplace.
These are undertaken as part of a larger research team at the University of Oxford that includes colleagues from the Department of Education and the Department of Economics. Geoff's work involves using both qualitative and quantitative methods, and his work on learning and knowledge transfer is informed by socio-cultural theories of cognition and situated learning. More recently this has led him to an increased interest in issues of knowledge transfer, both through teaching and learning, and through collaborative arrangements for research between Higher Education and the private sector.
Geoff is currently co-directing the following projects:
- Degrees of Success: the Transition from VET into Higher Education, funded by Hefce via the ESRC's Teaching and Learning Research Programme
- An evaluation of the Diploma Design process funded by the Department for Childre, Schools and Families
- The Nuffield 14-19 Review funded by the Nuffiled Foundation
- The ESRC Research Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance (SKOPE) funded by the ESRC
He coordinates Theme B of SKOPE's current research programme. In October 2008 he will start work on new SKOPE projects involving:
- A comparative analysis of innovation in teaching and learning in Further Education in Austria, England and Germany
- Analysis of performance management regimes in VET
- The design of VET qualifications
