Systematic review of primary language education

The aim of this project is to produce a systematic review of the research literature which contributes to our understanding of key factors in the effective provision of Modern Foreign Language (henceforth L2) learning in primary schools in England.

The specific foci of the proposed review are threefold:

  • to accumulate empirical evidence on the most appropriate age at which to start learning an L2;
  • to review research on the most appropriate curriculum type to offer young-beginner learners in primary school (e.g. oral/aural skills only; oracy and literacy; language awareness)
  • to review research on the impact of L2 learning on first language (L1) development (particularly L1 literacy) and to investigate whether this impact is related to which L2 is being learnt.
