Hilary Term Seminar Series
'Research in Access, Participation and Success in Higher Education'
Rationale
Access to Higher Education (HE) has been on the research agenda of sociologists and educationists for a long time and has mainly been concerned with (the lack of) diversity in terms of HE students’ characteristics and backgrounds. More recently the range of patterns of participation, and the experiences students have in HE, have become a research focus. Additionally, researchers have begun to ask questions about the ways in which HE is linked to the labour market.
This seminar series attempts to provide an overview of on-going research in this broad area. By bringing together different research traditions, it attempts to critically discuss concepts such as ‘widening participation’, equality and diversity in HE, and ‘graduate employment’.
The series is aimed at research students (students on the MSc in HE and other Masters programmes, doctoral students, etc.), Department of Education staff, students and academics from other University of Oxford Departments and external guests.
Location and timing
The seminars will take place at the Department of Education, University of Oxford (15 Norham Gardens, Oxford OX2 6PY, Seminar Room D) at 13:30 on Tuesdays throughout the Oxford Hilary Term (see dates below). Each seminar will be preceded by finger food and drinks in the Department Common Room at lunchtime (from 12:45) which will allow participants to meet the speakers informally before the seminar.
