Picture This is a bold and inspiring visual literacy research initiative, born from the vision of the Robson Orr Foundation and developed in partnership with leading institutions across the UK. At its heart, this project invites young people across the country to see, think, and create differently – using art not just as a subject, but as a powerful language for learning, expression, and connection.

How you can get involved

Children learn from infancy to engage with visual information, but visual literacy-the ability to interpret, analyse, and create meaning from visual information-needs to be developed. Picture This proposes to transform our current understanding of the inter- relationships between visual literacy and related desired outcomes.

Over the next four years, we are looking to engage with thousands of primary school aged children in England. We would love for your school to join us!

Our collaboration

Our collaboration extends across the UK’s most respected art and education institutions. With the support of Art UK, the Government Art Collection (GAC), and Oxford’s GLAM (Gardens, Libraries and Museums), schools will gain access to a remarkable array of artworks and resources. This includes The Superpower of Looking, Art UK’s flagship visual literacy programme, and the GAC’s schools programme which brings original artworks into the classroom. These partnerships ensure that students aren’t just looking at art – they’re engaging directly with Britain’s rich cultural heritage.
