Service children – those who have a parent or carer who serves, or has served, in the British Armed Forces – are a group of children in society whose voices are often absent from research, policy and practice. In schools, this has meant that service children’s unique educational experiences, associated needs and distinctive identity, all shaped by the demands of the armed forces, are not always fully understood or supported.

Join us for this in person and online event focused on understanding, supporting and promoting service children’s experiences in English state schools. Taking place in April, this event will coincide with the ‘Month of the Military Child’, an initiative designed to raise awareness of service children and celebrate their positive impact in their schools and communities.

By the end of the event, you will have:

  • A greater awareness and understanding of service children’s experiences – with a focus on how the military shapes their lives and educational experiences
  • Greater clarity on effective use of the Service Pupil Premium and how to develop wider school culture and practice
  • A digital pack signposting to further information and resources
  • An offer of support from Dr Robinson to assist in creating, or developing, your school’s provision for service children.

The event is tailored for school staff and those with responsibility for pupil premium allocation in English state schools. It will also be useful for trainee teachers alongside practitioners and third-sector organisations who support military families. All are warmly welcome to join, including researchers and students at the Department, and external visitors from schools, colleges, charities, and other areas of related policy and practice.

Bio

The event will be delivered by Dr Lucy Robinson, Department of Education alumnus and current ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at Cardiff University. Lucy’s ESRC-funded doctoral research involved working creatively with groups of service children to explore how military life shapes their identity and school experiences and won BERA’s 2025 Doctoral Thesis Award. Lucy also received the Centre for Evidence for the Armed Forces Community’s Early Career Researcher Award in recognition of her work, and her current postdoctoral fellowship aims to consolidate her doctoral research through developing outputs, building networks and engaging in professional development.
