Dr Mary Pitoniak is an independent consultant in educational measurement with nearly four decades of experience in large-scale assessment. During a 23-year career at ETS she led the programme that audited testing programmes against standards of best practice, and she spent two decades working on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). She has led assessment training and capacity-building in many countries, is an expert in standard setting (co-authoring the chapter on the topic with Ronald Hambleton in the fourth edition of Educational Measurement), and co-edited the fifth edition of Educational Measurement, for which she and Linda Cook received the 2026 NCME Annual Award for Exceptional Achievement in Educational Measurement. She holds an MS and a PhD in educational psychology and psychometric methods from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
