Reading in England and Beyond; Teacher Event on the Results of the Progress in International Reading

PIRLS is a study conducted in 5-year cycles in over 50 countries and tests the reading comprehension skills of Year 5 pupils. England has participated in all of the previous PIRLS cycles (2001, 2006, and 2011). With every release, results are controversially discussed by politicians and the media. But, teachers’ perspectives are seldom heard and the implication of the results for teaching are less clear.
You are warmly invited to this teacher event to discuss the findings of the PIRLS study and their usefulness in classrooms along with other teachers and scholars from the Oxford University Department of Education.
The evenings’ program includes:
- Summary of the main PIRLS 2016 results, with a particular focus on findings relevant for teachers in England
- What can we learn from PIRLS? A teacher’s perspective (Alice Wetherell, Deputy Head Teacher, Ryvers Primary School)
- Open discussion round
- Drinks and nibbles
