Webinar Lunchtime Series: Adolescents in care – Needs, pathways and engagement in multiple and interacting systems
Export to calendarAbstract
Adolescents have specific yet diverse experiences in the care system related to their age, gender, trauma histories and sometimes hidden or undiagnosed disabilities. This talk brings together Dr. Larsson’s quantitative and qualitative research to date on the identity needs, pathways in and out of care, and risk and resilience factors for adolescents. It has a particular focus on the ways in which care-experienced adolescents appear in multiple and interacting systems such as care, education and criminal justice. The presentation will cover what can be learned about promoting stability and positive turning points, as well as reducing individual and system-related risks, from partner agency data and professional perspectives, alongside the narratives of adolescents themselves.
Bio
Dr. Birgit Larsson is an Associate Professor in Social Work and Sociology. Her research in the Centre for Research on Children and Families (CRCF), based in the School of Social Work at UEA, focuses on vulnerable young people and emerging adults in the care, education and criminal justice systems with the aim of impact on policy, practice and outcomes. She has a particular interest and expertise in researching the characteristics, needs and outcomes of children whom professionals and systems find challenging; this encompasses children who have had childhood trauma/maltreatment and care histories, and adolescents/young adults with victimisation experiences and/or neurodevelopmental difficulties. She’s a mixed-methods researcher who combines big data (national and local datasets) with in-depth qualitative methods, such as narrative research, and works in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies to undertake research and disseminate findings/promote change.
