Arniika Kuusisto

Honorary Research Fellow

Professor Arniika Kuusisto is a Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Education.

She is a Professor in Child and Youth Studies, especially Early Childhood Education, at the Department of Child and Youth Studies, Stockholm University, and a Research Director at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki.

Arniika is the Principal Investigator of the Academy of Finland and University of Helsinki funded research project Growing up radical? The role of educational institutions in guiding young peoples worldview construction (2018-2020), examining young people’s (ages 15-19) life trajectory and worldview development in the Finnish context. The project team includes Liam Gearon at the department as the Lead International Co-investigator, as well as postdoctoral fellows Dr Pia-Maria Niemi (McGill’s University, Canada, and University of Helsinki) and Dr Saija Benjamin (University of Helsinki).

Arniika’s other research projects include another Academy of Finland funded Nature or Nurture? Technology Assisted Multi-Method Autobiographical Approach to Value Learning during Transition to School (2016-2018), which takes an ecological approach to examining children’s value construction and learning trajectories among Early Childhood Education and Care children (ages 3-8).

Besides the present projects, also Arniika’s previous work has mainly been based on a mixed methods design. Her published doctorate Growing up in Affiliation with a Religious Community: A Case Study of Seventh-day Adventist Youth in Finland (Waxmann, 2011) examined young people’s value learning, socialization experiences and agency; in particular young people’s negotiations on values and belonging on the borderline between ‘majority’ and ‘minority’ memberships.

In 2008-2010, Arniika carried out a research project on diversity in Early Childhood Education as a PI in the project Multicultural Children and Adults in Day Care MUCCA, a joint venture between the University of Helsinki and the City of Helsinki Social Services Department. This was followed by Encountering Diversity in Education EDEN, a project on responses to diversity in the comprehensive school age group, carried out 2011-2017 in co-operation with a partner project CARDIPSat the University of Södertörn (Sweden) and University of Tarto (Estonia).

In relation to her work on children’s and young people’s value learning trajectories and life histories, Arniika is working at the department with Dr Liam Gearon on teacher professionalism and educators’ human rights literacies, and the ECEC education on values, cultural heritage, and citizenship. They have recently edited the volume Value Learning Trajectories: Theory, Method, Context (Waxmann 2017) as well as co-authored several recent and forthcoming research articles.
