This master’s course builds the significant knowledge and skills base needed to be an effective and inspirational teacher educator and offers significant, innovative and sustained education for both new and experienced teacher educators.
In the first year of the course, students will complete three taught units, each lasting eight weeks.? In a typical week, students complete a series of tasks, and take part in group discussions via Microsoft Teams.?Tasks will involve individual work, group work and small projects. All tasks will be based on students’ own teaching practice and readings that are readily accessible. These units last from October to December, January to March, and April to June.
During the second year, the focus is on the research and development project.
There will be two residential units in Oxford consisting of lectures, discussions, group work, fieldwork in schools, private study and student presentations. Costs for accommodation and meals during these residential units are not covered by course fees. Students matriculate in absentia.
Assessment will take the form of both formative assessment and summative assessment. Formative assessment will take place during the two residential units in Oxford, which all students are required to attend. Summative assessment will be through written assignments, one for each of the three taught units in the first year, and the research and development project to be submitted at the end of the second year.
Successful completion of all these components is required to achieve the MSc in Teacher Education.

The induction week where we all came together was invaluable as it enabled everyone on the course to get to know each other and start to build relationships. The resources on WebLearn are very comprehensive – I know exactly what I need to do in each week of the term and so can plan ahead round busy times at school and family commitments.
Studying for the MSc has allowed me to investigate many of the issues in which I was already interested more deeply and consolidate my knowledge and allow me to back up my position from a much more solid evidence- and research-informed position.
Teaching FE teachers is an absolute privilege; I really believe they are the unsung heroes of the education system and that more research should be carried out to explore the vital work they do and how they can facilitate the best outcomes for their students.
The introduction of special interest groups as an opportunity to engage with issues outside of the course content and in which even the course coordinator participates is a marvellous addition to the course.
