Thanks to very generous funding from the Society of Educational Studies, Professor Liam Gearon and Emma Williams will be convening the 2018 Colloquium on Writers and their Education – a major international conference held at Oriel College, Oxford University.
The event will include cross-disciplinary inputs from leading scholars and industry professionals, through visits to New York and Harvard, as well as keynotes from some renowned theorists, including senior figures from the University of California at Berkeley, City University New York, and Harvard.
Writers and their Education brings together scholarly and literary-professional examination of conceptions, perceptions and representations of education in the life and works of writers across all genres of literary fiction (biography, criticism, drama, fiction, poetry, including children’s literature), and writing in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The colloquium is designed to take a fresh look at the influences of education, as they are manifested in the works of writers. It also provides a platform for contemporary and historical reflections on the professional practice of writing. Our keynote presentations and rich array of parallel presentations share the collective aim of setting a new agenda for research at the interface of education, literature and literary professional industries. The aim of the Society for Education Studies has long been to promote fresh methodological and theoretical perspectives on education. Our colloquium on Writers and their Education will embed and give prominence to literary, arts and humanities perspectives, in and for educational research.
