Considering ethnicity in quantitative education research

Export to calendar

Abstract

The overall aim of the seminar is to consider a range of different ways in which ethnicity can be studied in quantitative education research. We will discuss when and what various approaches to including information about one’s ethnicity in quantitative studies are appropriate and the implications for these methodological choices.
The relationship between ethnicity and education is a very important, but also a very complex one. There are many quantitative studies that look at different aspects of this relationship, but there are many challenges in unpacking what the ethnicity variable means in all the statistical analyses. In this presentation, I want to discuss the complex ways in which linguistic, cultural, and sociodemographic factors could be brought together to ‘measure’ one’s ethnicity in a valid and reliable way that makes sense for both researchers and research participants.
