Bio

The seminar presents the conceptual design, empirical work and analytical strategy of the qualitative biographical study from the international comparative project “ISOTIS: Inclusive Education and Social Support to Tackle Inequalities in Society” (funded by the EC Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme).

The biographical study was primarily focussed on mothers with pre-school and primary school children and conducted in 10 EU countries. The presentation addresses methodological challenges and opportunities of comparative biographical study, including design of an interview, selection of informants, organisation of the empirical phase of the study and choice of appropriate analytical strategies for interpretation of biographical data. The findings from the study in England provide insight into the nature of inequalities from the perspectives of ‘disadvantaged’ families and explain everyday life strategies used by families with young children to overcome educational and cultural inequalities.
