About the Conference
As announced in the First Announcement of the ERME Topic Conference 2022 Language in the Mathematics Classroom, this terms’ event will be held at Oxford University, from 7th to 10th September, 2022.

Theme, subthemes and structure
The major theme of the ETC, ‘Language in the Mathematics Classroom’, will be organised into the following overlapping subthemes (ST):
ST1: Developments in the study of classroom interaction and discourse;
ST2: Language in heterogeneous classrooms, particularly the impact of different linguistic/multilingual contexts on the learning and teaching of mathematics;
ST3: Teacher Education for language-responsive learning and teaching of mathematics.

Program
In contrast to previous ETCs on Language in the Mathematics Classroom, emphasis will be on topic sessions, where papers with the same overarching topic will be presented, across subthemes.

This way, the organizers intend to break the traditional boundaries between working groups and subthemes, aiming to facilitate cross cutting discussions and future collaborations across thematic boundaries. The conference will be in English.

The conference begins with a YERME half-day on 7th September beginning at 12.30pm. This will be followed by dinner in a local restaurant with members of the IPC (not included in the conference fee). The main conference begins at 8.30am on Thursday 8th September and the conference will end at 1.30pm 10th September. There will be a conference dinner on the evening of Friday 9th September (included in the conference fee) following some tours of Oxford city (a range of tours will be available).

Possible Covid Measures
We expect the conference to be held in-person.

Considering that Covid is still affecting our lives and our opportunities for attending conferences in person, we will consider hybrid options for participation at ETC12. These hybrid options will only be available if COVID measures prevent a participation in person. Information on this will be provided in due time. Based on experiences in previous years, the late summer 2022 should allow for an in-person conference with minimal risk for the participants. Nevertheless, there might be country-specific regulations that might prevent some people from participating, which cannot be planned for. In that case, hybrid options apply.

Paper and poster timeline
The submission of Posters and Papers is organized through e-mail. For details about the call for proposals, see the previous First Announcement. Send your proposal as both, Word- and PDF file, to Jenni Ingram (jenni.ingram@education.ox.ac.uk) and Alexander Schüler-Meyer (a.k.schuelermeyer@tue.nl). The file must be named as ETC_FIRST AUTHOR_PRIMARY SUBTHEME, e.g., ETC_Ingram_ST1.docx.

Paper and Poster submissions must use the CERME template and follow the guidelines of CERME papers/posters outlined in this template (e.g., for page limits). Design Posters should also use this template for its heading and author information, but beyond that only provide a 500-word abstract. The CERME-template can be found on the CERME12 website.

Registration
Registration will be open until the 25th July 2022 or earlier if the maximum capacity for the conference is reached. The registration fee includes lunch and tea and coffee for each full day of the conference and a conference dinner at an Oxford college. There is a reduction in the conference fee for PhD or DPhil students. Register your place on the ETC Language in the Mathematics Classroom conference.

Accommodation & Travel
An online searchable map is provided by the University, and you can find the Department of Education under Departments.

From London airports
From London Heathrow and Gatwick airports, take The Airline coach service, which runs 24 hours a day. You can also get to Oxford by train from Heathrow via London, and from Gatwick via Reading.

From London Stansted airport, take the Stansted Express train service to London Liverpool Street and then take the tube to either Paddington or Marylebone for direct trains to Oxford. Alternatively there is a National Express 737 coach service.

From Birmingham International Airport, take the train from Birmingham International Station direct to Oxford.

Trains
Direct services run from London Paddington (serving Oxford station) and London Marylebone (serving Oxford and Oxford Parkway stations). Other services operate from the north via Birmingham New Street; from the south via Reading; and from the west via Didcot or Reading.

Oxford Railway Station is a 5 minute walk from the centre of Oxford and around a 15 minute walk to the Department of Education.

Coaches
The Oxford Tube offers a direct service between Oxford and London, running a frequent timetable on a virtually 24-hour basis, Monday to Sunday.
