In this presentation, I use the term “textbook transformation” to refer to the development and formation of a textbook based on another selected pre-existing textbook, and the means of such development can be translation, adaptation, or rewriting based on the pre-existing textbook, which leads to the formation of a new textbook.

In the talk, I will draw on my own experiences in transforming the Chinese maths learning resources series the Yi Ke Yi Lian to the English learning resource series the Shanghai Mathematics Project Practice Books to analyse and discuss the issues and challenges in textbook transformation, and its significance in international exchange and collaboration in the development of school mathematics textbooks. In particular, I will introduce a comparative case study I and my colleagues conducted to illustrate how culture might play an essential role in textbook transformation.
