When research hits close to home – Doing fieldwork in places and with people we care about

15th November 2018 : 12:45 - 14:00

Category: Seminar

Research Group: Qualitative Methods Hub

Speaker: Maayan Ravid, DPhil Student, Criminology

Location: Department of Education, Seminar Room B

Convener: Alice Tawell, DPhil student

In this talk I reflect on the experience of doing fieldwork in my home country, with communities I was previously engaged with through social activism.

I focus on issues of researcher ‘objectivity’, positionality, and vicarious trauma. The talk should help students think about and prepare for expected difficulties before fieldwork, or challenges faced after their return.
