The Department of Education has launched two new courses in Mandarin teaching – the PGCE Mandarin and the PGDip Learning and Teaching Mandarin.
These programmes respond to the growing national and global demand for qualified Mandarin teachers. The Department of Education is a world leader in education, and students will learn from leading experts in Mandarin pedagogy.
PGCE Mandarin
The full-time, one-year PGCE Mandarin course prepares graduates to teach Mandarin in secondary schools. The course combines academic study with hands-on classroom experience, with school placements available across England.
It is open to graduates with Mandarin, Chinese or related undergraduate degrees, as well as native speakers with relevant academic backgrounds. Students will occasionally be asked to attend in-person teaching in Oxford, but the majority of the teaching will take place online.
The course will enable graduates to become inspiring and effective teachers of Mandarin to young people, and quickly to become innovative leaders in the field.

PGDip Learning and Teaching Mandarin
The part-time, online Postgraduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching Mandarin is designed for practising Mandarin teachers worldwide. The one-year course will enable Mandarin teachers to become research-informed practitioners and is ideal for those seeking professional development in Mandarin teaching.
Apart from one residential week in Oxford, the course takes place entirely online, making it accessible globally.
The entry requirements are a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree in any discipline, with qualifications in education or languages preferred, and applicants must currently be working in Mandarin education.
Students will gain a deep understanding of the theories and research related to Mandarin learning and learn how to effectively apply this research to teaching practice.
