Schools invited to take part in national visual literacy research

A new national project is inviting schools to explore how children experience and respond to art, helping to build evidence on the impact of visual literacy skills on future success.

Picture This: The Robson Orr Visual Literacy Research Initiative invites young people aged 7-12 years old across the country to see, think, and create differently – using art not just as a subject, but as a powerful language for learning, expression, and connection.

Every school that takes part will receive fully resourced, free Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and ongoing support, and they can choose a timetable that suits them. For example, a few hours a week for a month, or a regular after-school club for a term. The initiative is open to any school in the UK, regardless of size, type or intake.

Associate Professor of Education, Ian Thompson said: “The project is really exciting and we’re looking for schools to help us. We have active recruitment sites but actually the project is open to schools across the country – we need schools to get involved.

“I think the project could have enormous ramifications, but it could also lead to some really interesting future areas of research. We think the opportunities that the Picture This project presents are endless.”

Picture This: The Robson Orr Visual Literacy Research Initiative is a partnership between the Robson Orr Foundation, the Department of Education at the University of Oxford, Government Art Collection and Art UK.
