About me

Dr. Aklilu Alemu Ambo is a DPhil candidate in Education at the University of Oxford and an Assistant Professor of Education Policy and Leadership at Madda Walabu University, Ethiopia. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Southampton Education School, University of Southampton, furthering his research on international education policy.

His research programme is dedicated to advancing equity and quality in education systems, with a particular focus on Ethiopia. His work critically examines three interconnected areas: the implementation and effectiveness of education quality management policies in secondary and higher education; the challenges and strategies of promoting gender equity, specifically through female affirmative action in universities; and the factors influencing teacher development, including professional satisfaction, instructional leadership, and effective training.

Dr. Alemu is an accomplished and prolific scholar. His research has been published in high-impact international journals including Higher Education Policy (Springer Nature), Frontiers in Education, Social Sciences & Humanities Open (Elsevier), and Cogent Education (Taylor & Francis). His scholarly contributions have been recognised globally, most notably through his appointment as a 2023 HRAF Global Scholar at Yale University. Prior to his doctoral studies at Oxford, he earned his PhD in Education Policy and Leadership from Addis Ababa University.
