Emily Macmillan

About me

Emily is Departmental Lecturer in the Department of Education conducting research into secondary mathematics education.

A secondary mathematics specialist with a particular focus on KS3, Emily has taught in a wide variety of schools on three continents at every age range from Reception to A-Level and beyond. She has worked in the charitable sector designing curricula, creating and publishing classroom resources, and supporting teachers’ professional development in schools across the UK.

Emily’s main research interest is mathematics pedagogy. Most recently she has been examining the tensions between different pedagogical approaches to mathematics education within a large multi-academy trust, investigating how these tensions can be exacerbated or eased through the use of centralised resources. She is interested in how providing opportunities for students to think mathematically and talk about their thinking impacts their ability to solve unfamiliar problems.

Her DPhil thesis considered the effect of teaching mathematical proof on students’ argumentation skills.
