James (Jim) is a Departmental Lecturer in History Education. He teaches on the History PGCE, the MSc in Learning and Teaching, and supervises DPhil (PhD) students.
Jim’s research centres on secondary history curriculum design, historical thinking, and history-teacher research. He is particularly interested in (1) history students’ extended writing, (2) the relationships between academic and school history, (3) the interplay between temporal and geographical overview and depth in history curricula, and (4) history teachers’ ideologies toward curriculum design.
Prior to completing his doctoral studies, Jim taught and mentored in a number of state secondary schools and sixth-form colleges. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Historical Association and acted as an Associate Editor for the professional journal Teaching History from 2017-22. Jim has also reviewed for a range of academic journals such as The Curriculum Journal and The History Education Research Journal. Jim was a part of the Ofsted History Subject Working Group which provided advice on the new inspection framework’s development and implementation from 2018-21.
