Matías Montero is an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) scholar, and he is pursuing a DPhil in Education at the University of Oxford. He holds a BSc in Sociology from the University of Chile and an MSc in Education (Research Design and Methodology) from the University of Oxford. His doctoral research examines gender disparities throughout the careers of Latin American researchers in education, employing a sociological lens rooted in cumulative disadvantage theory. This research intends to understand the longitudinal dynamics of gendered collaboration patterns and explores how higher education institutions might address these unbalances.
Before joining Oxford, Matías served as a Research Assistant at the Centre for Advanced Research in Education (Institute of Education, Universidad de Chile), where he contributed to studies on equity in education, gender segregation in Chile’s secondary and higher education, and the career trajectories of Chilean education researchers. He has also taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses as a Teaching Assistant in quantitative methods and sociology of education.
Matías has collaborated in initiatives funded by the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development, the Chilean Education Quality Assurance Agency, and the Social Information Record of the Chilean Ministry of Social Development, with research topics spanning gender gaps in mathematics achievement, networks and patterns in the creation of knowledge in social sciences at Latin American universities, and student collective action in higher education. In partnership with UNESCO, he has contributed to studies on the learning achievements of migrant students in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, and consulted on projects addressing inclusion and gender in Latin American secondary schools.
