Senior Departmental Lecturer in Mathematics Education

Job role

About the role

The Department of Education is seeking to appoint a Senior Departmental Lecturer in Mathematics Education. The post-holder will lecture and teach graduate students on the professional programmes offered by the Department, predominantly the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Mathematics programme, but also the MSc in Learning and Teaching (MLT) and the MSc in Teacher Education (MTEd) programmes.

For this post, the Department wishes to appoint a candidate whose main research and teaching experience is in the area of Mathematics Education. All academic staff in the Department are expected to be strongly research active, and the person appointed will enhance the Department’s REF profile through their publications and research funding. A proven high standard of ability to research and to provide graduate teaching and supervision is expected for an appointment to be made.
The PGCE, which is commonly known as the Oxford Internship Scheme, has an international reputation for both the quality of the programme and the innovative thinking that has underpinned it since its inception over 30 years ago. The MLT is a two-year, part-time Master’s programme that, like the PGCE, places particular emphasis on research-informed pedagogy. The MTEd is a two-year, part-time, distance-learning programme for teacher educators worldwide.

The successful applicant will contribute to teaching, research, and academic administration, engage in advanced study and academic research relevant to learning and teacher learning in secondary schools, and draw on this activity to inform all work related to the above programmes. They will also contribute to curriculum leadership, supervise DPhil students, collaborate with school partners, and develop externally funded research projects in their specialist area.

About you

The successful candidate will hold a relevant PhD/DPhil and a good first degree in the curriculum subject, along with a UK teaching qualification or equivalent. They will have:

• Significant experience of teaching mathematics at secondary level
• An aptitude for teaching and a strong awareness of pedagogic methods
• Experience of mentoring or tutoring in initial and/or continuing teacher education in the UK or a similar context
• Sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge to plan and teach on the PGCE, MTEd, and MLT programmes
• A strong publication record and familiarity with the existing research in Mathematics Education
• Evidence of the ability to write research proposals and lead funded research
• Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with colleagues and external partners
• Ideally, teaching and research experience in Higher Education, including substantial experience of teaching A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics

The appointment will be subject to standard pre-employment checks, including proof of right to work and identity. As the post involves regulated activity with children, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will also be required.
