The department’s Centre for Comparative and International Education held its 2nd Oxford Symposium for Comparative and International Education (OXSCIE) in partnership with the Aga Khan Foundation and the Global Centre for Pluralism at Keble College, Oxford on 19 – 20 June 2018.
Over 150 academics, donors, policy makers and practitioners attended from across the globe to hear a line-up of international experts consider the ‘big’ questions facing education and its future development. Questions ranged from what role education will play in the face of ever changing external influences that threaten the nature of society and the shared futures of citizens, to what is expected of teaching as poverty, inequality, prejudice, discrimination, and other forms of social and spatial divisions increase.
The symposium, led by Dr David Johnson (Reader in Comparative and International Education in Developing Countries and convenor of the Centre for Comparative and International Education), saw over 30 researchers from across 4 continents present their papers on, ‘Re-Shaping Society: Education in Uncertainty’, ‘Shoring-Up Society: Teaching in Uncertainty’, ‘Navigating Society: Learning in Uncertainty’ and ‘Investing in Society: Responsibility in Uncertainty’. Plenary sessions were followed by high-level round table discussions.
The department’s Centre for Comparative and International Education is supported by the Aga Khan Foundation is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to the study of educational systems around the world. Since its inception in 2000 the centre has advanced public dialogue about the challenges to educational change, reform and reconstruction in low-and middle-income countries, and the crises and changing faces of educational systems in other parts of the world. The centre continues to inspire new conversations, scholarly papers, and empirical studies about the role of education and the nature and meaning of learning in a world in flux.?
