Just 1.5% of GCSE students study a book by a writer of colour.

In partnership with Penguin Books and the Runnymede Trust, the Department are helping to break the barriers for inclusive reading in schools through their Lit in Colour project.

Professor Velda Elliott was commissioned to carry out independent research to uncover these barriers and provide actionable recommendations for change.

Picture This is a bold and inspiring visual literacy research initiative, born from the vision of the Robson Orr Foundation and developed in partnership with leading institutions across the UK.

The project will engage thousands of primary-aged children across England, using art as a powerful tool for learning, creativity, expression, and connection. Schools are invited to join this exciting programme and help shape the future of visual literacy education.

A major new report found strong demand for teaching the history and legacies of the British Empire in secondary schools, but highlighted significant gaps in current provision and called for system-wide changes.

The report launch event brought together teachers, researchers and young people to discuss how the recommendations can be taken forward into practice.
