News
Published by Hannah Freeman

The research group formerly known as the Teacher Education and Professional Learning Group is now called the Oxford University Teacher Education Research Group (OUTER).

Convened by Dr Katharine Burn, OUTER undertakes national and international research spanning all phases of teacher education policy and practice, from the recruitment of potential teachers through initial teacher education and induction to issues of retention and career-long professional learning.

MSc Teacher Education

The MSc Teacher Education is a part-time course for teacher educators, developed and led by members of OUTER. It blends online learning with residential weeks in Oxford and focuses on developing professional practice, designing programmes, and conducting research in teacher education.

The two-year, part-time course is a world first, bringing together teacher educators in the UK and internationally. It is intended for all those interested in increasing their knowledge and the skills required for effective and inspirational teacher education, while working in such a role.

Applications are open for entry in Autumn 2026. Find out more about the MSc Teacher Education.

Research Seminars

OUTER also hosts a programme of research seminars.

The first seminar on 5 February introduces a new book, ‘Educating the Teacher Educators: Who, What, How and Why’, which draws on practitioner research undertaken by teacher educators engaging with the MSc Teacher Education and beyond.

The seminar will include presentations from the authors of four of the chapters, highlighting key theories, evidence and insights, before concluding with a discussion of the book’s contribution to the field and to the professional education of teacher educators.

Join the seminar on Thursday 5 February at 4pm in Seminar Room A or online via MS Teams.
