New project explores how pupil feedback could strengthen language teaching

Modern languages teachers across England are being invited to take part in RESULT, a new research project investigating whether pupil feedback can support teacher professional learning and improve engagement and attainment in languages.

At a time when motivation, uptake and attainment in modern languages remain a national challenge, the study will explore how student feedback collected via a Pupil Perception Survey can help teachers better understand students’ experiences of language lessons and use this feedback to reflect on and develop their practice.

Participating teachers will receive personalised feedback from their pupils, along with free resources and guidance to support their professional development.

The project also aims to build a stronger evidence base for using pupil voice as a developmental tool, rather than an accountability measure. If successful, the approach could offer a practical, scalable and low-cost way of supporting teacher development, with potential applications beyond language education.

Dr Laura Molway, Principal Investigator of the project, said: “We hope this project will give language learners a stronger voice and help teachers better understand their perspectives and reflect on their practice.”

RESULT (Responding to Experiences of Second Language Teaching) is currently recruiting modern languages teachers working in state-funded secondary schools in England. Teachers who would like to find out more are invited to complete a short expression of interest form, with no obligation to take part.
