Kari Sahan

About me

Kari Sahan is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Oxford, Department of Education. She is also a member of the English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) Research Group.

Her research explores the implications of English as a global language for teaching and learning, with a specific focus on the use of EMI in higher education. Her current project examines assumptions of English language learning and enhanced employability through EMI, through a longitudinal study examining students’ transitions to work. Kari’s research has also explored multilingual pedagogies, language policy in international and transnational higher education, and students’ emotions and engagement.

Kari holds a DPhil in Education from the University of Oxford, Department of Education. Prior to her Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, Kari was an Associate Professor at the University of Reading, where she was also the Programme Co-Director for the MA in English Language Education.
Kari’s work has appeared in journals such as System, ELT Journal, Journal of English for Academic Purposes, Language Teaching, and Teaching in Higher Education. She is the author of English-Medium Instruction in Turkish Universities: Policies, Practices, and Perceptions (Routledge), and she has collaborated on numerous externally funded, international research projects. Before her DPhil, Kari worked at the Turkish Fulbright Commission in Ankara and as an English language instructor at Bursa Technical University, Turkey.
