Marie Therese Gumpert grew up in the Republic of San Marino and draws on her interdisciplinary background in law, politics and language education to explore curriculum, Europeanisation and competences for living in diversity.
Before beginning her DPhil, Marie Therese completed a first-class LLB in Law with Politics and International Relations at New College of the Humanities, followed by an LLM in Legal Practice (LPC) at the University of Law in London. She subsequently completed a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages, supported by a British Council Languages Teacher Training Scholarship, and taught German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese in UK comprehensive and grammar schools.
Her doctoral research explores how European norms are interpreted and incorporated into the curriculum of the Republic of San Marino. She is particularly interested in the relationship between international frameworks, national educational traditions and teachers’ professional judgement.
Her wider research interests include language education, educational equity, and the relationship between law, policy and educational practice.
