DPhil student celebrates viva success with no corrections

News
Dr Sara Collins has successfully passed her DPhil viva with no corrections for her thesis, “Act like a Doctor: Portraits of Medical Students Negotiating the Multiplicity and Spatiality of Professional Identity Development in America.”

Her arts-informed qualitative research examines how medical students with multiple dimensions of identity experience the professional identity development process and investigates the role of medical education space during identity transformation.

This work highlights how America’s broader sociohistorical contexts continue to shape the present-day experiences of medical students.

The viva was examined by internal examiner Dr Jason Todd and external examiner Professor Tasha Wyatt, from the Department of Health Professions Education.

Sara’s supervisors were Dr Judith Hillier and Dr Danica Sims.

Reflecting on the achievement, Sara said: “Having passed the viva with no corrections, everything still feels surreal.

“I’ve spent the last week reflecting on my time in the Department and all the people who supported me along the way, especially my supervisors. I couldn’t have asked for two better people to be on this journey with me.

“The DPhil has been so meaningful to me both personally and professionally.

“I’m excited to continue working in medical education research and supporting medical students.”
