Cheak Su Peng

Doctoral Student | St Antony's College

About me

Su Peng is a geography and humanities educator from Singapore with over a decade of teaching experience, most recently serving as Subject Head (Humanities) at Canberra Secondary School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Education) with a double major in Geography and English Literature and a Master of Arts in Humanities Education, both from the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University. She is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Oxford, supported by the NIE Overseas Graduate Scholarship under the Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) scheme.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of geography education, children’s geographies, and education for sustainable development. Her previous research has explored how geography textbooks shape young people’s geographical imaginations and how pedagogical approaches can strengthen students’ geographical reasoning and critical thinking. Her proposed doctoral research at the University of Oxford will examine how Singapore secondary school students from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds understand and navigate urban sustainability through their everyday spatial experiences.
Drawing on concepts of geographical citizenship and participatory research approaches, she is particularly interested in how young people’s lived geographies can inform more inclusive, equitable, and empowering educational practices. Through her research, Su Peng hopes to advance geography education that recognises young people as active geographical citizens capable of critically engaging with and shaping more just and sustainable futures.
