Developing Lifelong Learners for an Automated Future: How Motivation, Mindsets, and Digital Learning Enable Continuous Upskilling

The Project

This project addresses a pressing challenge: how professionals can continue learning as automation and artificial intelligence rapidly change the nature of work. In Norway, this issue is particularly critical in the accounting sector, where digitalisation is advancing quickly and reshaping professional roles. At the same time, the challenge extends far beyond Norway. Similar pressures are evident in the UK and across other countries, as well as in sectors such as education and other knowledge-intensive professions.

The project aims to understand what helps people learn, unlearn, and relearn in a fast-changing workplace. It will examine how personal factors such as motivation and attitudes toward learning support successful upskilling, and which types of digital learning tools and experiences are most effective. It will also explore how workplace environments influence people’s willingness and ability to engage in learning.

To achieve this, the study uses a mixed-methods design. It will begin with a review of existing research, followed by a survey of accounting professionals to identify key patterns. In-depth interviews will provide insight into real-world experiences, including barriers and motivations. Where possible, data from workplace learning platforms will be analysed to understand actual engagement.

The expected impact is both practical and academic. The findings will inform the design of more effective learning tools and workplace strategies, helping organisations support their employees in adapting to technological change. While grounded in the Norwegian context, the insights will be highly relevant to the UK, education systems, and other sectors and jurisdictions facing similar demands for continuous learning and workforce adaptability.
