Evaluation of Maths Reasoning
The Project
The Mathematical Reasoning programme develops children’s understanding of logical principles related to number and operations as well as quantitative reasoning. The programme consists of 12 teaching units, delivered to pupils once a week for 12 weeks as part of their normal mathematics lessons. Teachers receive training and are provided with lesson plans and materials to deliver the programme. Learning is also supported by online games, which can be used by pupils both at school and at home.
Terezinha Nunes and Peter Bryant originally developed and piloted the programme, which was found effective in a large scale randomised controlled trial (RCT). This most recent funding allows the Children Learning group to evaluate its effectiveness when the intervention is rolled out by the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM) using a “train the trainer model”. This tests whether it can be brought to scale and will create publishable research outputs.
