Velda works principally in the field of English (L1) Education, where her work engages with the ways in which we teach and assess literature, and how books and society interact. She is particularly interested in questions of equity and representation, and unsettling imperialist legacies in the English curriculum. She has led the two Lit In Colour research reports and continues to be involved with the campaign.
Velda is one of the Editors of the Oxford Review of Education, and is also an Associate Editor of English in Education. She is co-convenor of the Race, Coloniality and Education Research Group with Dr Jason Todd. She also convenes the Qualitative Methods Hub in the department, along with Dr Steve Puttick and Dr Nicole Dingwall.
Velda was the recipient of the National Associate for the Teaching of English’s Award Outstanding Contribution to Research, the UKLA Academic Book Award, an International Fellowship from the University of Adelaide and has given the Harold Rosen Memorial Lecture.
