The House of Commons Education Select Committee are conducting an investigation into the integrity of the English public examination system. The Director of the Department of Education, Professor Jo-Anne Baird gave evidence to the Committee on Tuesday 28 November 2017.

“Whilst recent cases of malpractice by teachers in the Pre-U examination were shocking, they were also rare,” she said.  Nonetheless, she noted the pressure on teachers and the need to ensure systems of accountability did not produce unintended consequences that resulted in cheating.  Dr Michelle Meadows, Executive Director for Strategy, Risk and Research at Ofqual drew upon a joint project with the Department of Education, Examination reform: the impact of linear and modular examinations at GCSE when responding to a question on the effect of the withdrawal of modular examinations.
